PubTrivia as a QuizXpress alternative
QuizXpress is desktop software with buzzers and white-labelling; PubTrivia is a web app for one job. Where QuizXpress is more capable, and what that costs you.
One of these does far more than the other
QuizXpress is a game-show platform. It runs on physical buzzers and keypads as well as phones, it is white-label so an operator can put their own branding on it, and it is sold into pubs, hotels, cruise ships, museums, corporate events and television production. It handles audiences into the thousands.
PubTrivia does one thing: a live quiz night in a venue, with players on their own phones.
If you need buzzers, or your own branding on the screen, or a format that is not a pub quiz, QuizXpress can do things we simply cannot, and you should look at it rather than at us.
The cost of that capability
Breadth has a price and it is not only the licence. A platform that has to cover buzzer hardware, keypads, phones, web players and a dozen venue types has more to set up, more to learn and more that can be configured wrongly at half past seven on a Tuesday.
QuizXpress is also desktop software you download and install, with licences bought from a shop alongside hardware. That suits an operator with a kit bag and a laptop they control; it suits a pub manager using whatever machine is behind the bar rather less.
PubTrivia runs in a browser, so the host device can be the venue laptop, a tablet or a phone, and there is nothing installed on a machine you then have to be standing next to.
| PubTrivia | QuizXpress | |
|---|---|---|
| How the host runs it | A web page, on any device with a browser. | Desktop software you download and install, with a 15-day demo. |
| Buzzers and keypads | Phones only. Nothing to buy, nothing to charge, nothing to lose. | Supports physical buzzers and keypads, sold through their shop. |
| Your own branding on screen | It looks like PubTrivia. | White-label, a stated part of what they sell. |
| What it is built for | Pub and bar quiz nights, and nothing else. | Pubs through to cruise ships, museums, corporate events and TV production. |
| Very large audiences | Up to fifty tables on Pro, unlimited on Ultimate. | Advertised for events up to around 5,000 players. |
| How you pay | Monthly subscription, cancellable. | Licences from their shop; tiers exist but pricing is not on their front page. |
| Setup before your first night | Add tables, print the codes, pick a pack. | Install, license and configure the software, plus hardware if you are using it. |
Choose QuizXpress if you are an operator
If quizzes are your business rather than your Tuesday, if you run events at multiple venue types, want your own brand on the screen, or need buzzers for a game-show format, it is the more serious tool and it is not close.
The same is true if you are running something that is not a pub quiz at all: a conference game show, a museum installation, a televised format.
Choose PubTrivia if you run one venue
A pub running a quiz on a Tuesday needs the quiz to happen, not a platform to configure. Nothing to install, nothing to license, no hardware to charge, and the host device can be whatever is behind the bar.
The narrowness is the feature. Everything in it assumes a pub quiz, which is why setting one up is a pack and a start button rather than a configuration exercise.
