Quiz night in a bar

A pub quiz is read out. In a bar, half the room does not hear the question. There is music, there are people who did not come for the quiz, and the acoustics were designed for a crowd rather than for a voice.

Here the question is on every phone as well as the screen, so being heard stops being a requirement. A group standing at the back can play a quiz they cannot hear a word of, which is not something a microphone and a printed sheet can offer.

Tables matter less in a bar, and sometimes there are not any. That is the case for individual mode: every player ranked on their own, no need to be sitting with the people you are scoring with, and no problem when a group moves.

If your room does have tables and people use them, team mode still works, but do not assume it. A quiz that asks a standing crowd to organise themselves into named tables loses people at the first step.

A bar crowd will not sit through six rounds of ten. The thing that works is a quiz that moves: shorter answer windows, fewer questions, and time-weighted scoring so the standings keep changing rather than settling early.

Answer windows go down to five seconds. On time-weighted scoring that is genuinely brisk, since the whole decay curve happens in five seconds, which is the effect you want in a room with a soundtrack.

Run it in bursts, too. Three short rounds spread across an evening holds a bar crowd better than one long quiz, and the pacing is yours to set: the next question goes up when you launch it.

In a bar, they always do. Somebody who walks in during round two scans a code and joins the question that is live, having missed the points already scored. They are behind, and they are playing, which is better than being told the quiz started twenty minutes ago.
