How to use this round

Geography is the most democratic round in a pub quiz. Everybody has looked at a map, nobody studied it recently, and a table of four will usually have one person who is unexpectedly good at flags.

It also works without any equipment, which is not true of a picture round or a music round, so it is the round to reach for in a venue with no screen and no sound.

If you do have a screen, half of these convert straight into a map round: show the country, ask for the capital.

Turning these into a map round

If the venue has a screen, a map round is the single best use of it. Put an outline of a country up, ask teams to name it and its capital, and score two points.

It is quicker to run than a written geography round, it is more visual, and it is one of the few round formats where a table with no strong geographer can still work it out between them.

Keeping a geography round fair

Spread it across the continents deliberately. A round that is six European capitals and four American states rewards exactly the people it always rewards.

Avoid superlatives with a contested answer: 'the longest river in the world' has an argument attached to it, and the argument will find you.
