How to use this round

Sport is the most divisive category in a pub quiz. In a sports bar it is the round everybody waits for; in a mixed room it is the round where four tables score two and one table scores ten.

Unless you are running a sports bar, use one sport round in a mixed night rather than a whole sport quiz, and spread it across several sports, because a round that is eight football questions is a round for the same table every week.

Nothing here depends on a current record, a current champion or a current league position, which is what stops a sport round going out of date faster than any other category.

Easy

Rules and basics rather than results. Most tables will get nearly all of these regardless of whether they follow sport.

Why an all-sport quiz rewards the same table

Sport knowledge is unusually concentrated. In most rooms there is one table where somebody has followed a sport closely for thirty years, and a full sport quiz is a formality in their favour.

That is fine in a sports bar, where it is the point. In a pub it slowly costs you the other tables, because a quiz you cannot win is a quiz you stop coming to.

The remedy is one sport round out of six, spread across at least four different sports, with more rules questions than results questions, because rules are known by people who play rather than only by people who watch.

Keeping it evergreen

Do not write questions about who currently holds anything. The world record, the current champion and the league leader all change, and a sport round is the fastest-ageing round in any quiz.

Completed events, established rules and historical firsts do not move. Every question above is one of those.
