Why this round works

True or false is the fastest round in a pub quiz. There are no options to read out, no spelling to worry about, and a table can answer in three seconds, so ten questions take about five minutes rather than fifteen.

That makes it the ideal palate cleanser after a heavy round, and the ideal round for a bar or a taproom where a long round loses the room.

It is also much harder to sweep than it looks. Every table will get five or six by guessing, and getting nine or ten requires actually knowing, so the round separates the leaders without leaving anyone on zero.

How to run it

Mix the true and false questions together and aim for roughly an even split, since a round that is eight true and two false is a round a table can beat by answering true to everything.

Read each statement twice, as always, and do not editorialise. 'Ooh, this one's tricky' tells the room it is false.

Give the answers immediately after the round rather than at the end of the night. Half the enjoyment of this round is the explanation, and it lands best while people still remember what they guessed.

Where it fits in a night

Straight after the hard round. A room that has just scored three out of ten needs a round it can score on, and this is the fastest way to give it one without being obviously patronising.

It also works well as the last round before the break, because it finishes quickly and gets people to the bar while they are still arguing about the answers.
